7 essencial tips for pitching seed money

So you got into a meeting with a seed investment fund. Congratulations ! But what now ? Well, of course, you’ll have to prepare your presentation and you have so much to say that you don’t even know where to begin. I know, I know, been there, done that. However, only a small fraction of what you consider to be of the utmost import really is.

So let’s get started …

1. Who are you ? Present the team

Your founding team is probably the most important asset you have at this stage. Does your team encompass technical skills ? Marketing skills ? Sales? Do you have experience in starting a company or are you just chasing a dream ? Have you failed before in starting a company ? What university did you graduate from ? What jobs did you have ?

These are all questions to which you may answer. Of course, you should pick the ones that are most relevant to your team’s background and to the current project. Winning a drawing contest in middle-school isn’t the best example.

Don’t lie, don’t bullshit, don’t stretch the truth and don’t tell half-truths. Just be brief and be clear.

2. What isthe problem you’re solving ?

Everyone has ideas. If I had a penny for each ground-breaking, earth-shaking, revolutionary, the-next-Google idea I had, I wouldn’t have needed to start a company because I would have been stikin’ rich already. Ideas are worth precisely squat. Focus on the problem you’re solving and on how many people actually DO have that problem. Because they are you market and in the end, they will have to give you money.

However, your mind might not have initially focused on a problem. There is still hope ! Even if all you had was an idea, present it the other way around: starting from who needs it to how the idea emerged.

3. What is your unique solution ?

Here’s a problem for you: transportation.

And here’s my pitch:

Transporation. It takes too goddamn long, it’s expensive and it burns up fuel we’re running out of.

My solution? The portable teleportation device. It’s called the telePad. It’s like an iPad, only it can teleport you (together with itself) almost anywhere.

But hmmm… is it doable ? Not quite. Because I do not have the technology and it would probably take at least 50 years to have something minimal figured out.

So explain to your potential investors why your solution is viable, cost-effective and (most importantly) why you can do it – see this in relation with [1].

Also, you should probably give attention to how easy it would be for someone to clone your solution and your business. Investors care about that because they, just like everyone else, want to live under the illusion that they’re unique.

In the Seedcamp application form, there was a very interesting question that summarizes my point “What is the unfair advantage you have over your competitors?” Think about that for a second.

TIP: Viable answers do NOT include:

“We came up with it first !”

“We have a head start !”

“My competitors are corporations. They’re slow like the Tyranosaurus Rex. As a start-up we’re fast. Velocy-raptor fast.”

“No one else has the tech skills required for the job”

“We have the best sales team in the country/region/city”

4. Monetization ?

Ok, so this telePad idea of your is going to save the world from the fuel-crisis. Let’s just assume that for a second. But how are you going to sell it make money off it ?

Do you want to sell the devices ? Or maybe sell subscriptions to the telePadNet ? Do you want to show banners on each teleportation screen ?

Essential TIP: Focus on just one monetization scheme. “But I have three ! Doesn’t that mean more money ? Isn’t that a good thing?” No and no. Having several monetization schemes doesn’t mean more money, it just mean you have no idea what would work best on your target market. For an investor, this probably translates into “He ain’t got a clue what he’s talking about, he’s just throwing some things out here”.

So focus on only one monetization scheme and argue that it’s the best possible solution. If you have a lot of users who aren’t willing to pay right away and a lot of content, go for advertising. Have you found a niche market and you’re quite sure users have their credit cards ready by the time they reach your site – affiliate marketing. Have you developed a high-quality service that people are just dying to have, aim for the subscription model. And so on …

Also, you should mention market size. How many people have this problem you’re tackling, how much money are they willing to pay, how likely are you to convice them ? Don’t just blurt numbers out. If you don’t know, it’s better you shut up. It would been even better if you did your homework.

So why are we launching Google Chrome? Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web.

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends -- all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff -- the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better. Today, we're pleased to announce the public beta of Picasa 3.0, the next generation of Google's photo management software. We're also launching a redesigned Picasa Web Albums with a brand-new 'name tags' feature, which gives you the power to quickly label and organize your photos based on who's in each picture.

From the start, Picasa's goal has been to help people get more from their digital cameras. Earlier versions of Picasa focused on supporting users at every critical juncture in the digital photo lifecycle -- making it easy to import, organize, edit, print, and (since the advent of Picasa Web Albums) publish your photos online. Unlike piecemeal alternatives, Picasa manages all these things inside a single application, and with a consistent, easy-to-use interface.

Fast-forward to today, and a few things have changed. Sharing online has skyrocketed in importance, as more of us develop a network of friends and family who are tuning into our pictures. Online availability also matters more as we start to use our phones, TVs, and wifi frames to deliver our photos. And as users get more experienced, they're demanding more creative ways to remix, enjoy, and distribute their photos.

We've therefore brought the Picasa software and Picasa Web Albums much closer together, breaking down barriers between your home PC and your online albums. New controls in Picasa 3 make it much easier to quickly upload photos, and we've added a new 'sync to web' feature that automatically updates online albums when you add or edit photos on your computer.

That's just the start. Picasa Web Albums now includes a new 'name tags' feature that helps organize your growing photo collection by people. There are multiple benefits to having a blog including the low cost (or no cost), the resources that will help you get traffic to your blog and the fact that you can provide your blog as an RSS feed. An RSS feed will allow readers to automatically receive your updates into their RSS reader.

Let's get started with our 6 steps.

1. Set up your blog. You will need to decide what you are going to blog about. You should decide on a theme and name your blog appropriately.

There are a number of free ways to set up a blog & to have it hosted for free. We will go with Blogger.com for our first blog.

Blogger will allow you to set up a blog for free they will host it for free and they will ping search engines every time you update, meaning you will get spidered & found.

Visit blogger.com & click the button on the front page labelled 'create your blog now' then follow the step by step instructions that Blogger provide.

Some key settings you will want to get right are:

I) 'Host your blog at Blogger' = Yes
II) 'Add your blog to our listings' = Yes
III) 'Ping Weblogs.com' = Yes
IV) 'Publish Site Feed' = Yes

2. Write some content. Before we move any further there has to be some information on the site & that means that you have to make some entries. You can write some of these entries yourself & some can be quotes from sites of interest to your reader that you can post using the Google Toolbar.

You can download the Google toolbar for free at toolbar.google.com. The toolbar includes a Blogger button. When you visit a site that has something of interest to your readers you can highlight the appropriate text & click the Blogger button. The content will then be added to your blog along with a link back to the site.

3. Once you have some content eg a weeks worth of blogging with 1 or 2 entries for everyday, you can apply for an adsense account. When you sign in to Blogger you will see an invitation to join Adsense. Use this link and apply for an account.

You can find out all about Adsense on the Adsense page but basically you get Google ads on your site & get paid if your visitor clicks them.

Google will decide what adverts show on your site based on the content it finds within.

You need to be aware that Google will decline your application if your site is not considered to have content. Nobody outside of Google knows the precise rules on this.

Once you have been accepted you can get some javascript from Google to add to you site. Copy this & then log in to Blogger.

Once you have logged into your blog you will see that one of the tabs across the top of the screen is labelled 'Template'. Click this. You will need to know a little bit of HTML to help find the right location to paste your Google code. But with a little experimentation you will find the right place for you. See the resource box at the end of this article for more help.

I would suggest that the ads need to be seen when the site loads but should not be too obvious or dominate your site.

4. Write some more content. Try and keep your content coming at regular intervals as a number of directories will check on your site at regular intervals & the smarter ones will visit on a schedule based on your update schedule. They will probably determine this in the hours after you first submit to them. Which is what we will do next.

5. Submit your site to Blog & RSS directories. Because you are hosting at Blogger, Weblogs.com will already be notified when you update your blog. (That means that every time you make a new entry they are automatically notified) You will need to manually submit to the various other directories some of which will require a link on your site to theirs.

6. Keep writing interesting content. Ideally you want people to come back again and again. As with customers its harder to get a new visitor than to keep existing visitors. So make it interesting, in fact make it so interesting that they can't help but tell all their friends about it also.

As with most free ways to make money this will take time to get going, but if you can build a following you will make money.

All you have to do, after a simple signing up procedure, is to log in to the PTC site and click the ad links you find there. To qualify as having viewed the advertisement, you must have the page opened for a certain amount of time (30 seconds on avg.). When the time is up, you can close the window and you've got your money, then you can click the next link. The page with the ad is not needed to be kept up front, you can minimize it if you wish. The ad links can be clicked only one at a time. Until the time isn't up for this, you ought not click another link, it won't be paid. All the links on a PTC site can be clicked in about 5-10 minutes depending on how many links are on that site. One link after the other, that's the rule, remember? There are many people who log onto the internet everyday looking for a way to make money online.

They start with all the best intentions, but unfortunately, before they know it they are getting bombarded with information and are simply spinning their wheels.

I completely understand this. There is so much internet marketing information online and once you get started it seems like “information overload”.

Many people will sign up with an affiliate program promoting the affiliate’s product or program. This makes sense. Starting as an affiliate marketer is probably the easiest way to get started online. There are many affiliate programs out there that will give you everything you need to promote their products or program…Well almost everything.

You see, many of these affiliate sites will give you a website, but you don’t own the site. It is a gateway site. You don’t even own the domain name for that matter.

Being part of one of these programs is not bad though. I belong to several. SFI is a perfect example. I joined their program and have several sites that they gave me to promote their products and their affiliate program.

But if you are truly going to make money with these types of sites you are going to have to do a lot more than simply sign up for their program.

It is simply unreasonable to think that people are going to just stumble upon your site and sign up for your program and start making you money.

There are a few things you need to do if you truly want to make an affiliate program work.

First of all, you must have your “own” web page with your “own” domain name and your “own” host. You will then have links from your “own” site to the other “gateway” site(s). You will promote your gateway site it, but you will promote it through your own site.

There are so many reasons for this I couldn’t possible fit it into this one article, but basically the site is yours to run the way you want to. Think of it this way…it is “your” store and you are selling “their” product.

Your web page could be designed as a short sales letter that focuses primarily on this one program if that is what you choose. Or, you could focus on several affiliate programs and products within the same market. For example, a sales letter with the top 3-5 money making opportunities.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Either way, promoting one program/product or promoting several, you will not only want to own your own site, you definitely want to be able to “drop in” on potential customers from time to time. What I mean by that is you want to capture email addresses of people who visit your site.

There are many, many, opportunities online, but here are the 5 factors you really need to consider, to guarantee your success:

1. Set your goals.
As with any business you need to set goals. Goals help you visualize where you want to go, and keep you motivated when you get up in the morning. You goal may be to earn $500 or $10000 a month, it may be to take that dream vacation, or it may be to give up your job. These are all great goals. It is imperative that you write them down and reread them often. You need a short term goal - e.g monthly goal, to keep you motivated from day to day and a longer term goal 1-2 years - to keep you on track and prevent you from chucking it in. I am confident that if you adopt a positive attitude and embrace your goals then you will soon be making money online.

2. Take time to research.
As I alluded to earlier there are many people making money online - and there are thousands of different businesses that you can try. The internet is a mine field of information and “making money online” opportunities are not difficult to find. However you will need to decipher the genuine opportunities from the scams. Many online promises are just methods to extract money from you. Some do's and don'ts

DON'T fall for the “get rich quick schemes” that promise huge returns in record time
DO try and email or telephone for more information
DO search online for feedback on the opportunity e.g. try name of opportunity + scam
DON'T part with money without consulting a friend you can trust and/or sleeping on it.

3. Find something that you like.

4. Find something worth your while.
While it is a good idea to avoid the sales pitch that promises the sun, moon, and stars; it is also important that you don't take the safe option - that guarantees $5 an hour for sending emails, filling our surveys, or licking stamps. These amount to you underselling yourself, because the opportunities of making money on the internet are so much greater. Look for systems which offer a good monthly return for a few hours work a day - if you find something with a residual income all the better.
